External Task End Check
For checking the status of external tasks, the period that should be taken into account must be specified. The External Dependency tab in the properties pane of external tasks contains a selection of settings which can be considered for calculating it.
The activation start time of the external task is irrelevant, what is important is its end time. If the end time does not lie within the settings defined here, further processing depends on the settings made in the external dependency. You can either wait for the external task to end, skip the external dependency or cancel the workflow.
The following intends to illustrate the different periods that are taken into account for checking the status of the external task. In our examples, the workflow consists of two tasks and one external dependency.
Since last Workflow Execution
The period during which the status of the external task is checked starts when the last workflow execution ends.
Within a Time Span before Workflow Start
The period during which the status of the external task is checked starts before the workflow starts. How far back this time span dates depends on the specified value.
The period during which the status of the external task is checked is limited if the end of the last workflow execution lies within this time span.
After Workflow Start
The period during which the status of the external task is checked starts when the workflow starts.
