Global Search

The global search box on the right corner of the menu bar at the top of your screen allows you to search for virtually any item in Automic Workload Automation. Type your search string. A dropdown list displays a selection of the results and information on the total number of items found. The list provides quick links to the complete list of results. It also gives you access to all functions available to the found items that are displayed on the dropdown list. The global search box is the entry point for the Advanced Search.

The results of the search depend on your object authorizations.

To find an object, you must have at least read rights to the folder where it is stored. Otherwise, the search does not display it. If you have read rights to a folder, the results of the search display all the objects contained in it, even in the case the authorizations specified for those objects restrict their access. The authorization attributes defined at object level are evaluated as soon as you try to interact with the object. This is why the list of search results displays objects for which you do not have read rights. You can see them on the list, but you cannot open or edit them.

To Perform a Global Search

  1. To start the search do one of the following:

    • To search for an object, enter its name (or part of it).

      Minimum length: 2 characters

Allowed wildcard characters: * and ?

By default, the global search function uses implicit wildcards at the beginning and at the end of the string you enter here.

      Example:

Entering DB_BACKUP triggers the search for *DB_BACKUP*. The following results are also suggested in the dropdown list:

      • MSSQL_DB_BACKUP
      • DB_BACKUP_MSSQL
      • MSSQL_DB_BACKUP_JAN
    • To search for a task enter its complete RunID. Entering only a part of it does not start the search.

  2. A dropdown list opens up displaying a selection of the results. It is divided in two sections. The upper half provides links to the objects and folders found. The lower half, to the tasks.

The number of items that are displayed depends on the values in the MAX_SEARCH_RESULTS parameter in the UC_CLIENT_SETTINGS - Various Client Settings variable for each Client. The default is 5, the maximum is 50.

Best practices: Keep this setting at 5 because the dropdown list does not provide a scroll bar if the number of results is large.

  3. Select one of the following:

    • All

To display a context menu with the processing options available to one or more items according to your rights and privileges, right-click them.

    • Objects

      • To open an object in the Process Assembly perspective, click on it.
      • To open the list of results, click the X Results Total link on the header of the Objects section.

This list shows up to 5000 objects. Your system administrator can change the maximum number of results to be displayed in GENERIC_SEARCH_LIMIT in the variable UC_SYSTEM_SETTINGS - Systemwide Settings.

    • Tasks

      • To open the complete list of its Executions in the Process Monitoring perspective, click on it.
      • To open a filtered list of Tasks in the Process Monitoring perspective using the Task Name as filter criterion, click the Show All Results link on the header of the Tasks section.

You can rearrange the columns and rows of lists to best fit your needs. From the list of objects you can start an advanced object search.

Note: When you search for an object, the global search also finds its links. For example, JOBS_JOB_A is stored in Explorer>JOBS>Source and a link to it is stored in Explorer>JOBS>Links. The result of a global search yields two entries, one for the original and one for the link
