Deleting Objects and Folders

As a developer and object designer or as an administrator, you can delete objects and folders, provided you have the necessary rights. The Delete function is available from all lists that contain objects, from combo boxes, and from the global search dropdown list.

Deleting Objects

Deleting objects does not remove them immediately from your system. It moves them to the Recycle Bin list, where you can still perform the following actions:

  • Check whether the objects are referenced by any other object
  • Restore them

Only users with the Access to Recycle Bin privilege can see and work with objects in the Recycle Bin.

Important! Deleting an object that is used in other objects can have a serious impact in your processes. To understand the potential effect of deleting an object, first check whether it is used by other objects. For more information, see Search for Use.

Notes:

  • Objects that have been archived using the AE DB Archive utility are not available in the Recycle Bin
  • The TRASHBIN_SHOW_MAX key in the UC_SYSTEM_SETTINGS variable determines the number of objects that can be displayed in the Recycle Bin
  • The DELETE_CHECKBACK_LIMIT system variable determines the behavior of the deleted objects in regards to the Search for use function

To Delete Objects

  1. Select one or more objects, right-click and select Delete.
  2. If you have configured your system to make you confirm that you want to delete, the confirmation dialog is displayed now.

If the object is used in other objects, a dialog is displayed now indicating it.

If you have selected multiple objects, the dialog indicates the number of objects you are about to delete. f you have selected only one, the dialog displays the name of the object you are about to delete.

For more information, see Customized Confirmation Dialogs.

  3. Click Delete.

Important! Links are not objects. To be able to delete them you must have write access to the folder where the link is stored.

To Delete Folders

Select one or more folders, right-click and select Delete.

Notes:

  • You can only delete a folder if it does not include sub folders. If it does, you must delete the sub folders first.
  • The objects that are stored in the deleted folders are not deleted but moved to <No Folder>. If there are links to one of these objects, the oldest link is deleted and the object is copied to this link.

Important! Deleted folders are no longer available in the database and cannot be restored from the Recycle Bin.

To Search for Object Dependencies

  1. Open the Recycle Bin list
  2. Search for the object and right-click to select Search for Use. A list is displayed that contains all the objects in which the selected record is being used.
  3. Right-click any item to open the context menu containing them.

Restoring Objects

Objects can be restored to folders only. This means that you cannot restore them to My Favorites, User Catalog, Recently Used or Transport Case.

To Restore an Object

  1. Open the Recycle Bin list
  2. Search for the object and do one of the following:

    • Right-click to select Restore. The object is moved to the Recycle Bin.
    • Drag the object and drop it to a different folder.

You can also select various objects and restore them in bulk.

  3. A pop-up message is displayed confirming that the object has been restored.

It is now available under <No Folder>. You can store it in a different folder using the Moving Objects or Folders within a Client function.
